  FREQUENTLY-ASKED QUESTIONS

What is an Angel Investor?
Angel investors are wealthy individuals who invest in high risk, early stage ventures by reserving a portion of their total investment portfolios to provide emerging companies with seed and startup capital through direct, private investments. Their goal is to achieve higher returns than the typical public markets provide. Most angels are active investors - who contribute their time and experience, as well as offer introductions to valuable contacts essential to the company's success - because they enjoy the thrill of helping entrepreneurs grow their businesses. To maximize the value added, most angels specialize in industries or technologies they understand, and invest only in companies within close geographic proximity.

What is an Angel Group?
Angel investor groups vary in structure, from formal to informal. Formal groups follow strict participation requirements that guide members' minimum investment activity and event attendance. Some groups pool members' capital to make investments on the group's behalf, while others allow individual members to invest in specific deals of interest.

What do you look for in companies?
The Wedgwood Circle will facilitate investment in companies and deals that have the potential to return both broad social/cultural return as well as economic return. The deals will be in the following areas of “culture creation”: film, music, television, publishing, theatre/performing, fashion, fine arts and computer/console gaming. The balance between risk and return (whether social/cultural or financial) will be determined by each angel. In general, however, the network will seek investment opportunities having:

  • Potential to shape the culture broadly, rather than create products for existing niche markets of the faith community; Wedgwood investment will be for the common good;
  • Strategic investment position; investment that has the potential to seed the next generation of successful culture creators;
  • Long range impact; although financial return should be measured in years, social/cultural return will have to be measured in decades; Wedgwood investment will be patient investing;
  • A compelling, well articulated strategy for providing both financial and social/cultural return;
  • Strong management with relevant experience, a successful track record, a desire for advice and coaching and a willingness to listen;
  • An exit strategy for the investors; and,
  • A company valuation that fits within a predetermined risk/reward calculation for the investment.
